Move Over Tony Soprano: Organized Retail Crime on the Rise

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

A recent study released by the National Retail Federation reports that the number of businesses victimized in the past 12 months is up from 79% in 2007 to 85% so far in 2008. More and more businesses are seeing their stolen merchandise popping up for sale in other locations (the internet clearly being one of the most prevalent places).

E-fencing is quickly becoming the primary modus operandi for thieves as they can resell the stolen merchandise anonymously without raising any eyebrows. One of the most important findings is how much "new in box" items are worth to the criminals. These items can render up to 70 cents on the dollar whereas traditional black market methods only render around 30 cents. This means "new in box" products are being stolen at a higher rate than ever. Loss prevention respondents estimate that nearly 40% of current "new in box" items for sale on auction sites is stolen.

The survey’s conclusion sites training and awareness, utilizing exsisting relationships among trade associations and the government and communication/advocacy as solutions to help reduce this trend. To read the full report, click here .

Good News For Organic Product Marketers

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

A recent study conducted by Mindset Media and Nielson Online reports that consumers that regularly purchase organic products are 153% more open to new experiences. This information is useful because it means that marketers no longer need to be as concerned with marketing their products strictly through niche channels (yoga or green magazines for example) and can now look to expand their efforts across multiple networks. The key being to appeal to these consumers’ mentality. These marketing efforts will reach a much wider audience that are perhaps not "classic" organic consumers (based on participation in yoga or other traditional wellness activities marketers use to target their products through) but rather a new brand of organic consumers-ones you can appeal to through a specific way of thinking.

The study also revealed that organic buyers come from all different levels of income. This is because buying organic is a mindset. People who are organic consumers believe that no matter what the expense, they are going to reap the benefits of their purchase and in some cases, might be getting more (healthier, more durable, better for the environment, etc.) for their money. So catering a marketing strategy to this attitude should be relatively straightforward.

St. Patrick’s Day sales expected to be lower than last year

Friday, March 7th, 2008

According to the National Retail Federation ’s 2008 St. Patrick’s Day Consumer Intentions and Actions survey, conducted by BIGresearch, consumers will spend an estimated $3.64 billion on St. Patrick’s Day, less than last year’s $3.76 billion.

Some are speculating the projected decline to be directly related to the fact that the holiday falls during the holy week before Easter this year. It could also be due to the looming recession which has consumers more wary about where they spend their dollars.

Regardless of the reason, if you are in the business of selling seasonal merchandise, you may want to consider some extra effort in your promotions in the coming week. Also, some cities are moving their official celebrations to March 14th to avoid any religious observance conflicts. Be prepared to take advantage of seeing this holiday celebrated more than once this year!

Congratulations to Joe, our iPod nano winner!

iPod nano

Joe responded to our survey question "What is your best tip for using the web to find products for your business?" with:

"I use various search engines and directories to source products, but my favorite way to source products is to ask other webmasters for good sources. I stick to the webmaster forums rather than ebay or a retailers forum, because the webmasters will have the same kind of requirements (no hassle dropshipping, easy online ordering) that I have."

Thank you for participating and check back for more giveaway opportunities!
